DVLA Accredited Trade Association Code of Practice

The FLA is pleased to announce that it has been accepted by the Driver and Vehilce Licensing Agency (DVLA) as an Accredited Trade Association (ATA) for access to vehicle keeper data. From 1 October 2007, no third party can have access to keeper data unless they are a member of an ATA. This Code of Practice governs the FLA’s status, and the responsibilities of third parties with access to keeper data, as an ATA.

The FLA, the Metropolitan Police, Auto Trader, eBay Motors, Exchange and Mart and Motors.co.uk have joined together to form the Vehicle Safe Trading Advisory Group (VSTAG) to combat vehicle-related fraud. As part of its aim to protect private buyers and sellers of cars, vans and motorcycles from Fraud, VSTAG has published a consumer advice guide.

This leaflet tells you about some of the information that you can get from agencies that can investigate the vehicle’s background for you before you buy it.

There are two main categories of imported cars: ‘parallel’ imports, which are generally vehicles originally built, although not necessarily imported from within the EU, and ‘grey’ imports, which were manufactured for a non-EU market – usually Japan – and then imported for sale in the UK. This guidance covers only the latter, grey imports.
